Softshell usually consists of two or three laminated membrane layers. The outer layer is usually made of synthetic fibers such as polyester, polyamide or polypropylene, because these synthetic fibers have the property of transporting moisture well without absorbing much themselves. The inside is made of a fleece fabric, which provides warmth and makes it nice and soft.
Softshell is robust, soft and supple and transports moisture from the inside out to prevent sweating. Softshell jackets are water-repellent in light snowfall or rain, but not waterproof, so not recommended in continuous rain. So they are the ideal companion in cooler temperatures, wind and a little precipitation.
