Prym's practical bias tape makers allow you to perfectly shape bias tape of any length for edging any fabric edge or even patchwork quilts. By cutting the fabric strips at a 45-degree angle to the grain of the fabric, the bias tape becomes elastic and can be perfectly worked even in curves. After the fabric strips have been cut and joined, the fabric is inserted into the wide opening of the bias tape maker and pulled through. The perfectly folded bias strip can be pulled out from the flat side of this useful tool and can be smoothed directly with an iron. This makes the bias tape quick and reliable, and it can be easily rolled up for later use.
With our bias tape maker you can easily make your own bias tape. So you always have the right ribbon for your sewing project. The respective width is embossed on the bias tape formers: 12mm, 18mm, 25mm or 50mm. The specification refers to the width of the finished (folded) bias binding. Bias tape is not cut in a straight line, but diagonally. This makes the band slightly stretchy, e.g. to be able to lay curves.

And this is how it works
- Fold the fabric at a 45° angle, secure the edge with a couple of pins and then cut the edge.
- You now have 2 pieces of fabric with a 45° edge. If you now put the lower right piece on top of the other one, you get a parallelogram.
- To connect the two pieces of fabric together, fold the top piece down onto the bottom piece, right sides together, and stitch along the overlapping edge with a 1cm seam allowance. Then iron open the seam allowances on the back.
- Then turn the parallelogram right side up and use a pencil to mark the width of your fabric strips. The strips now have to be cut twice as wide as you want your finished bias binding to be. For a 12mm wide bias tape the strips of fabric must be 24mm wide, for a 18mm wide tape 36mm, for a 25mm wide tape 50mm and for a 50mm wide tape 100mm wide.
- Then place your cutting mat on the table and cut the marked strips of fabric with the rotary cutter.
- If your strips are very short, you can still sew them together into one long strip. Place two strip ends right sides together at a 90° angle so that the outer corners overlap by 1 cm. Then stitch the ribbons together with a 1cm seam allowance. Then push the finished strips of fabric into the middle of the wider back of the bias binding maker. Then slide it all the way to the front. To do this, you can use a rounded needle and insert it into the upper slot in the bias tape maker.
- Now the folded bias tape comes out at the front.
- Use the iron to gradually iron the bias tape that is coming out while you continue to pull the bias tape maker backwards. Finally, fold the bias binding in half again and iron over it. Now it's ready to use :)
