Overlock thread is used for finishing, also called serging, the edges of fabrics that fray easily, as these would otherwise fray right up to the seam after some wear or washing, resulting in visible holes in the seams. It is thinner than regular sewing thread – yet very tear-resistant.
Because overlock and coverstitch seams require significantly more thread than seams sewn with a standard sewing machine, overlock threads are sold on large cones. The fact that the thread itself is finer than a standard all-purpose thread also has its reasons: the seam is worked with up to four threads. If the thread were thicker, the seam would be bulky. This feels uncomfortable when wearing the garment and doesn't look good, especially with tight-fitting clothes.
